{"id":497,"date":"2013-09-27T13:30:23","date_gmt":"2013-09-27T20:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/?p=497"},"modified":"2013-09-27T13:44:38","modified_gmt":"2013-09-27T20:44:38","slug":"indigenization-in-motion-indian-residential-school-day-of-learning-at-ufv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/2013\/09\/27\/indigenization-in-motion-indian-residential-school-day-of-learning-at-ufv\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenization in Motion: Indian Residential School Day of Learning at UFV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/files\/2013\/09\/Blood-Tears-Alex-Janvier-2001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Blood Tears Alex Janvier 2001\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/files\/2013\/09\/Blood-Tears-Alex-Janvier-2001.jpg\" width=\"189\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On September 18, 2013, a\u00a0<a title=\"IRSDL ufv today\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/blog\/2013\/09\/ufv-to-host-indian-residential-school-day-of-learning-on-sept-18\/\" target=\"_blank\">day-long collection of learning events, on-going displays, and interactive activities\u00a0was held at UFV\u00a0<\/a>in conjunction with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) national event in Vancouver, which ran Sept. 18\u201321. <a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/www.trc.ca\/websites\/trcinstitution\/index.php?p=26\">The Truth and Reconciliation Commission <\/a>of Canada has a federally assigned mandate to learn the truth about what happened in the Indian residential schools and to inform all Canadians about it.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission\u2019s website notes that the TRC hopes to guide and inspire First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis peoples and Canadians in a process of truth and healing leading toward reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect. A slogan that explains the motivation behind the TRC states that the process is \u201cfor the child taken; for the parent left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UFV&#8217;s \u00a0to goals of Indigenizing the Academy include giving all students and employees the chance to learn more about this aspect of Canadian history, and how it still impacts Canadian society today, by <a title=\"IRSDL website at UFV\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/indigenous\/day-of-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">taking part in events scheduled for several UFV locations on September 18<\/a>. The decision to transform the curriculum for this one-day event was approved by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/senate\/\">UFV Senate<\/a> at its June meeting. The general public\u00a0was also\u00a0invited to attend these free events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that it is our responsibility as a university to participate and show leadership in the process of examining, discussing, reflecting upon, and healing the wound in our national fabric caused by the legacy of the residential school system,\u201d said UFV provost and VP academic and Eric Davis. \u201cWe look forward to bringing the UFV community together for one day as we take responsibility for understanding the history and legacy of the residential school experience, and move forward together to build awareness and reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September 18, 2013, a\u00a0day-long collection of learning events, on-going displays, and interactive activities\u00a0was held at UFV\u00a0in conjunction with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) national event in Vancouver, which ran Sept. 18\u201321.
