We need to go back. We are repairing 500 years of damage. We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 need to acknowledge what\u2019s actually happened and fix it accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Four R\u2019s of Education<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Education \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is the practice of freedom.<\/li>\n<li>The \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Four R\u2019s of what we want from education:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Respect, Reciprocity, Relevance, Responsibility<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Elders and Institutionalization<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have made the title \u2018Elder\u2019 with a capital \u2018E\u2019. Yes, in the community we \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 know who our elders are but that is not their title.\u00a0 Was this deemed appropriate by the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 institution?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Group Breakout Session:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Finding a voice<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a conversation that needs to be had and is usually cast to the side.<\/li>\n<li>Bridging \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the gaps between institutions. Making connections networking with each \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 other, learning from each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Spirituality<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 need to bring the love tradition and spirituality back into the academy, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to make it a safe place for everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conforming <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Assimilating<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Colonizing <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Decolonizing<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 just assume that what we\u2019re doing is the right thing. When \u2018Indigenizing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Academy\u2019 we must question what we\u2019re doing, don\u2019t fall into our own \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 form of assimilation.<\/li>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 must be sure we aren\u2019t slowly turning to the same methods of the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 European\/Eurocentric mentality and ways. Not to conform.<\/li>\n<li>Rock \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the boat\u2026 If we\u2019re not rocking it then we\u2019re assimilating.<\/li>\n<li>More \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 than just bringing our culture into the academy.<\/li>\n<li>If \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it\u2019s not uncomfortable then it\u2019s not right.<\/li>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 must de-colonize first.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 think the response to racism is called \u2018Indigenizing the Academy\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 people have every right to be angry.<\/li>\n<li>Indian \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 act displaces us, our women.<\/li>\n<li>Matriarchal?\u00a0 The society here has been displaced and \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dishonoured.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Definition of Indigenization<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 determines the definition of Indigenization?<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is education without love?<\/li>\n<li>Indigenizing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 yourself is familiarizing yourself with your locale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Community \u2013 Learning and Sharing Knowledge<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from your community, learn with your community and then take that knowledge \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and those teachings and share them with other communities and people both \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 First Nations and Non-First Nations.<\/li>\n<li>How \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to learn how to forget everything you know to relearn the truth.<\/li>\n<li>When \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 we come together like we have at this gathering we share the spirit.<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is knowledge without sharing it?<\/li>\n<li>Sharing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 what you have, sharing what you know.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 comes from everywhere<\/li>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are family<\/li>\n<li>It \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 only takes one person to make a difference in our lives; it only takes one \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (us) to make a difference other people\u2019s lives.<\/li>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 don\u2019t know how we touch people. We are audio and visual people so we may \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have some small idea on the outside but we don\u2019t know how we touch \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 people\u2019s hearts.<\/li>\n<li>Be \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 careful what you say, what you do. You may be hurting somebody<\/li>\n<li>LOVE.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Younger generation having a foot in both cultures\/Responsibility of Youth<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Young \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 people nowadays have double the responsibility. They have to learn culture \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and they have to pay bills. Young native people nowadays have double the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 responsibility as well as having to wear two hats. Young native people \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have to wear one hat to live with their community and one hat to survive \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 outside of it.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPick \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 your head up. Pick your head up and be proud of who you are. Pick your \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 head up but don\u2019t pick your head up so high that your nose is in the air.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2013 Steven Point<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 you do in this generation will affect the next seven generations.<\/li>\n<li>You \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 need to go through the trials and tribulations to make it to the other \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 side stronger and more knowledgeable.<\/li>\n<li>Never \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 forget self-care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Speakers Session:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Definitions of Indigenization<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indian, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 First Nations, Aboriginal, Indigenous\u2026. All the names that non-First \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nations peoples have labeled us over the years.<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 does \u2018Indigenous\u2019 mean?<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 does \u2018Indigenizing the Academy\u2019 mean? We need to come together and find a \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 common definition before we can move forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Humility as a Highly \u00a0Valued Quality\/Weakness<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a leader, a great personal quality to have in our culture is to be humble \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and to have humility. However, in the history books it reads that \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 humbleness and humility is seen as a sign of weakness in the Eurocentric \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mentality\/culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Learning First Nations culture and History<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 need to learn, know and understand First Nations people and\/or your own \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 culture and history so you can properly teach others.<\/li>\n<li>It \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 starts within the faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is a genius but if you ask a fish to climb a tree it\u2019s an idiot. Everyone \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 has a gift; you just need to find it.<\/li>\n<li>You \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 can\u2019t fit a circle into a box.<\/li>\n<li>Some \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of the only people who are taught the truth about our history, the dark \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 parts of our past are Social Workers.<\/li>\n<li>Reflect \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 on what brought harmony to this land in the past.<\/li>\n<li>Frank \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Calder \u2013 the first aboriginal person to graduate law school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Elders<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 need to open the door to our elders and actually listen.<\/li>\n<li>Universities\/Colleges \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 really need to think about what their role is as an institution, what kind \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of society are they shaping, what is their contribution to the fate of our \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Preparing for the Future:\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to do the Hard Work<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Story: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coyote is in the forest and loses his needle. Owl comes and asks coyote \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018what\u2019s wrong\u2019? Coyote tells Owl \u2018I\u2019m looking for my needle.\u2019 Owl says to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coyote \u2018I\u2019ll help you find your needle\u2019 and then soars up into the sky and \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 circles the area looking for the needle. He comes back down and tells \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coyote \u2018I didn\u2019t find it, so it must not be here because if it were I \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 would have seen it.\u2019 Coyote was sad and tells Owl \u2018I really need my needle\u2026\u2019 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owl sees the stress in Coyote\u2019s face and asks him \u2018where did you lose the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 needle?\u2019 Coyote points to a completely different area and says \u2018I lost it \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 over there behind the bushes.\u2019 Owl, looking perplexed asks Coyote \u2018If you \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lost it way over there, why are you looking here?\u2019 Coyote responds \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018because there\u2019s light over here.\u2019 The point of this story is that we must \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 not do something because it\u2019s easier or not-not do something because it\u2019s \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 harder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 took us a long time to get to where we are and it\u2019s going to take along \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 time to get better but it is possible. Hard work, but worth it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 don\u2019t teach scientists how to feel, they teach them how not to.<\/li>\n<li>What \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 do we need to prepare ourselves for the future?<\/li>\n<li><b>How to beat the \u2018white man\u2019? Get an \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 education.<\/b> Beat them at their own game.<\/li>\n<li>If \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it\u2019s too easy then we\u2019re a part of the problem. What about \u2018All this and more\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>The \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conscious thoughts and words are only a tiny part of our existence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Where \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are we in the professional development of our tenure track to keep this \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 learning going from an Indigenous perspective without losing what we\u2019ve \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 learned so far, so we don\u2019t have to keep starting the process over?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>How \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 do we become inclusive of the primary, secondary institutions into this \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 discussion.<\/li>\n<li>People \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 really want to carry on what they\u2019ve learned at these conferences but \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 people can get caught up in life\u2026 Could we meet like this on a regular \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 basis? As many of us as possible to create and carry on an event like this \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 so we can keep this process going<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Next Steps Recommendations from the Canadian Federation of Students, National Aboriginal Caucus:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Put Keynotes on the web to create some \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 structure to use as a way to gather more information on the web from \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 others who read it.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>CADD \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <i>&#8211; Research<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Make \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indigenizing the Academy meetings a regular event<\/li>\n<li>All \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 institutions to put out a paper on anthologies on best practices.<\/li>\n<li>Document \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and track the professional development of our tenure track to keep this \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 learning going from an Indigenous perspective without losing what we\u2019ve \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 learned so far, so we don\u2019t have to keep starting the process over?<\/li>\n<li>The \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indigenous Scholars Networks.<\/li>\n<li><b>Power points and video of the keynotes<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Create an email network forum online for \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 those interested in indigenizing the Academy<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Send \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 out Surveys that every few months to each institution to see if we\u2019re \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 growing from this.<\/li>\n<li><b>Inform gradualte students of these \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 findings.\u00a0 These are Ideal master \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 thesis projects. We should inform students out there and work with them to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 do the necessary research that is needed to move forward.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Involve the youth!
