{"id":166,"date":"2013-04-20T18:46:58","date_gmt":"2013-04-21T01:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/?p=166"},"modified":"2013-05-20T18:54:04","modified_gmt":"2013-05-21T01:54:04","slug":"governance-partnerships-and-building-alliances-senior-administrators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/2013\/04\/20\/governance-partnerships-and-building-alliances-senior-administrators\/","title":{"rendered":"Governance, Partnerships, and Building Alliances (Senior Administrators)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sr. Administrators<\/p>\n<p><b>Governance, Partnerships, and Building Alliances<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do aboriginal groups work with post-secondary institutions?<\/li>\n<li>How do Indigenous and non-indigenous faculty build alliances to support indigenization?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A need to work more closely <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Band funding an issue<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Academy not always neutral: funding\u00a0 &#8212; goes to community or institution?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>More representation needed at all levels:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elders on institutional board;<\/li>\n<li>Aboriginals working at administrative level<\/li>\n<li>More aboriginal faculty<\/li>\n<li>Aboriginal respresentation on advisory<\/li>\n<li>Research ethics committee<\/li>\n<li>Institutional strategic plan includes recruitment and retention of aboriginal faculty, staff and students<\/li>\n<li>Aboriginal representation must mean that it is a meaningful relationship and not just surface recognition<\/li>\n<li>There are aboriginal people with credentials that are looking for jobs, so don\u2019t let your institution say there isn\u2019t anyone suitable out there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Issues with turnover and stability<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Wish to improve structure and consciousness at all levels<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of our institutions are led by white males.\u00a0 It is difficult for them to understand the female perspective let alone <b>the aboriginal perspective.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Overwhelmed \u2013 Huge job \u2013\u201cIt feels as though we are just starting\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The alliances and the networking from this conference have re-fueled me.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>To speak with colleagues at a conference like this it feeds me.\u00a0 It will carry me through the next few semesters.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Ignorance among non-aboriginals<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different nations have different protocols;<\/li>\n<li>Not realistic to lump all nations into one way of doing things<\/li>\n<li>Non-aboriginal people don\u2019t necessarily need to know about the culture but we both need to know how to work across differences<\/li>\n<li>As a non-aboriginal person working as a coordinator of aboriginal services, colleagues look to me as an expert.\u00a0 It is very difficult to get them to understand that I am not an expert<b>; I am a bridge between two cultures.\u00a0 It is a very uncomfortable place to be<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <b>Cross-Cultural training<\/b> needed<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Our responsibility to <b>educate<\/b><\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe didn\u2019t know\u201d is unacceptable<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People want to be <b>politically correct<\/b><\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People <b>afraid to offend<\/b> and so <b>don\u2019t say anything \u2013remain silent<\/b><\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I believe sometimes the lack of knowledge is wilful ignorance<\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People are afraid to admit they may be part of the problem: \u201cI am a smart, good person.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go to a place that will show me that I am part of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As an aboriginal person I don\u2019t want to have to deal with<b> the white person\u2019s guilt<\/b>. Take a risk and don\u2019t count on others to take care of you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cross cultural training available and resources:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have a large indigenous library as a resource<\/li>\n<li>Move forward thorough staff and faculty development<\/li>\n<li>2.5 hour workshop for staff called something like Aboriginal 101<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teaches about smudging, 6 nations<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anonymous questions asked of Elder (fear of offending, politically correct)<\/li>\n<li>Hard to attract faculty<\/li>\n<li>Mandatory sessions at new faculty orientation about aboriginal culture<\/li>\n<li>Faculty need safe, non-judgemental atmosphere<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Increasing visibility in the institution; making indigenization a priority<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indigenizing competes for time attention and funding with other large issues eg internationalization<\/li>\n<li>Need to get through to people in administration<\/li>\n<li>Persistence<\/li>\n<li>Go to meetings<\/li>\n<li>Talk about it at every opportunity<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Faculty &#8211;Take courses to the First Nations community \u2013powerful\u00a0 for both the students (community) and the instructor<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Have higher admin engage as much as possible with the students<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Example: We had many admin participate in a 10 day tribal journey that really took them out of their <b>comfort zone<\/b> to a <b>vulnerable place<\/b>. They got to experience <b>the generosity of the culture<\/b>.\u00a0 These aren\u2019t things you can experience from your office.\u00a0 These are the administrators that we now <b>see attending event<\/b>s and <b>taking risks<\/b>.\u00a0 Many said the <b>experience was transformational<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Key Words<\/p>\n<p><b>comfort zone<\/b><\/p>\n<p>a <b>vulnerable place<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>the generosity of the culture<\/b><\/p>\n<p>the <b>experience was transformational<\/b>.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Community Consultation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty &#8211;Take courses to the First Nations community \u2013powerful\u00a0 for both the students (community) and the instructor<\/li>\n<li>Although the institution may host a language course and perhaps even develop the curriculum we need to remember that the course itself belongs to the community.<\/li>\n<li>We have been able to co teach courses with an PhD and community person Funds for this are provided through the institution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Elders:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open door policy for elders<\/li>\n<li>Elders on institutional board<\/li>\n<li>Advisor council of elders<\/li>\n<li>Elders are like PhDs and should be acknowledged for this through pay equity<\/li>\n<li>What is an Elder? It is related not to age but to wisdom and respect from the community.<\/li>\n<li>Academy can neutralize tension between Elders who are traditional and modern traditional <b>and IRA system perspective<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Traditional Knowledge must always be protected by the community<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protection of the knowledge must be guarded through policies and procedures if it is to be part of the institution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Research ethics <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be policy around how to conduct research about indigenous people and ways<\/li>\n<li>Must include how you give back to the community<\/li>\n<li>These policies exist within our faculty but not institution wide<\/li>\n<li>Have recently started a research ethics committee \u2013 need to ensure that there is aboriginal representation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Decolonization <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starts in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t set the classroom up in rows<\/li>\n<li>If people are having trouble with daycare invite them to bring their children<\/li>\n<li>Red pen for marking is a negative memory trigger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Safety and security<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t set up the classroom in rows<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t use red pen for marking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Building Alliances: Networking<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We must build as many <b>alliances <\/b>and possible with people at all levels of the institution and within the communities: we need the <b>perspectives.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>We had set up an ongoing group called <b>\u201ccourageous questions\u201d<\/b> where a group of us got together and discussed <b>difficult topics<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Diverse Perspectives, Difficult Topics<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We need the diverse perspectives. <b>Share <\/b>and ask questions.
