{"id":140,"date":"2013-04-20T17:47:55","date_gmt":"2013-04-21T00:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/?p=140"},"modified":"2013-05-20T17:49:38","modified_gmt":"2013-05-21T00:49:38","slug":"workshop-i-breakout-group-7-senior-administrators-2-personal-and-institutional-reflections-on-indigenizing-the-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/2013\/04\/20\/workshop-i-breakout-group-7-senior-administrators-2-personal-and-institutional-reflections-on-indigenizing-the-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop I Breakout Group 7 (Senior Administrators 2) Personal and Institutional Reflections on Indigenizing the Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Personal and Institutional Reflections on Indigenizing the Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Workshop I Breakout Group 7 (Senior Administrators 2<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><b>A need to work more closely with all levels<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With good and bad past history institutions have some \u2018trust building\u2019 to do with First Nations communities.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How to indigenize?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need a <b>definition<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Need to start with <b>Aboriginal adviso<\/b>rs<\/li>\n<li>Have a <b>Learning Place<\/b> for <b>First Nations<\/b><\/li>\n<li>First Nations Programming included in the <b>strategic plan<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Even if the senior leadership is responsive to indigenization the various departments within institutions i.e.: library, student <b>services wonder what their role<\/b> or place is in the process.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>There isn\u2019t a sense of resistance<\/b>, just one of <b>confusion;<\/b> they need a broader sense of what indigenizing means.<\/li>\n<li>but the systemic barriers need to be acknowledged before they can be changed.<\/li>\n<li><b>Strategic plans<\/b>, education plans and the Board need to be on board to provide consistent, open, direct commitment to the Aboriginal common<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Middle management<\/b> struggles if these <b>senior management leadership elements<\/b> are not in place.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Campus\u2019s need to have resident Elders with First Nations involvement and consultation in all activities.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>A tangible description of what Indigenizing means is required so people know what they are expected to change.<\/li>\n<li>and <b>funding for gathering places and other programming was a good start<\/b><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Universities (management levels included) should be attending the World and National Indigenous Peoples conference and joining the World Indigenous Accreditation body.<\/li>\n<li>Institutions need to <b>recognize what traditional territory they are on<\/b> and also understand about the <b>issues of those that attended residential school<\/b> and the <b>residual effects that residential school stills has on communities.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Be careful indigenizing doesn\u2019t become institutional culturizing<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Indigenizing isn\u2019t about stealing or taking culture but about <b>having a better understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal people.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Public Policy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having <b>NVIT<\/b> here with us is a great opportunity to share knowledge talk about how to utilize cultural awareness and sensitivity and how to move forward. The government was trying to help <b>bridge the gap for First Nations students<\/b> and the Aboriginal Framework and <b>funding for gathering places and other programming was a good start<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Strategic plans<\/b>, education plans and the Board need to be on board to provide consistent, open, direct commitment to the Aboriginal common<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Middle management<\/b> struggles if these <b>senior management leadership elements<\/b> are not in place.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Strategic Plans, Education Plans<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strategic plans, education plans and the Board need to be on board to provide consistent, open, direct commitment to the Aboriginal common<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>the Aboriginal Framework<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hiring and Retention<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Issues with turnover and stability<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hiring and retention of First Nation faculty is also a problem, there can be the perception that because a <b>First Nations person does not speak loudly during the interviews<\/b> that they are not <b>strong people<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Hiring committees also need to be <b>aware of the culture and protocols<\/b> of not only students, but faculty and staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Student Recruitment and Retention:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communities\u00a0 where there are no bands makes the community liaison job difficult.\u00a0 The students do not self-identify as First Nations.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Change<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we incorporate Elders\/Dancers in the classroom? Some faculty are threatened by change and need the confidence around incorporating culture into the classroom<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Health <b>programming<\/b>: working toward <b>changing the thinking<\/b> from Physician centered to client centred<\/li>\n<li>Changes have begun in the way of Elders being invited to open ceremonies and community deliveries. Some Advisory committees include Elders from the community but there needs to be a conversation about the difference between First Nations ways of knowing versus the western way.\u00a0 <b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Funding<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Various Departments and Indigenization:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Programs such as Early Childhood Education need to be grass roots programs<b>, inclusive of the whole community in the classrooms<\/b> This builds confidence and self-esteem in children.<b> <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Programming:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NEC over 45 years has always had <b>Aboriginal protocols and practices<\/b> within their programming<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>They have <b>Welcoming ceremonies<\/b> and <b>cultural graduations<\/b><\/li>\n<li>College is governed by an <b>Aboriginal board<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Some institutions have Transfer agreements with Aboriginal organizations such as NEC and NVIT<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Communities where there are no bands makes the community liaison job difficult.\u00a0 The students do not self-identify as First Nations. There is an advisory committee to build a better approach to the First Nation program and approaches but the systemic barriers need to be acknowledged before they can be changed.<\/li>\n<li>Campus\u2019s need to have resident Elders with First Nations involvement and consultation in all activities.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Most programming offerings still cover at the European aspect instead of Indigenous material.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Adaptation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u00a0<\/b>Students transferring from Aboriginal organization into the larger institution: it is a shock when no characterization of indigeneity exists.<\/li>\n<li>. This conference is important for those institutions that are here and are in the first stages of thinking about incorporating culture to listen and learn.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0First Nations students may not have a choice other than the Public Post-Secondary if they don\u2019t want to leave home.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Institutions want to make them feel comfortable with no fear or intimidation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>More representation needed at all levels:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Some faculty are threatened by change and need the confidence around incorporating culture into the classroom<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Campus\u2019s need to have resident Elders with First Nations involvement and consultation in all activities.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Issues with turnover and stability<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Wish to improve structure and consciousness at all levels<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Overwhelmed \u2013 Huge job \u2013\u201c<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Ignorance among non aboriginals<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some faculty are threatened by change and need the confidence around incorporating culture into the classroom<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>With good and bad past history institutions have some \u2018trust building\u2019 to do with First Nations communities.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>I am a bridge between two cultures.\u00a0 It is a very uncomfortable place to be<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Culture<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Culture and Tradition<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some Advisory committees include <b>Elders<\/b> from the community but there needs to be a conversation about the difference between First Nations ways of knowing versus the western way.\u00a0 <b>Culture and tradition <\/b>needs to <b>be \u2018a way of being\u2019 rather than an event<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Most programming offerings still cover at the European aspect instead of Indigenous material.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>how to utilize cultural awareness and sensitivity and how to move forward?<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cross-Cultural training<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Educate<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>politically correct<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>afraid to offend<\/b><\/p>\n<p>so <b>don\u2019t say anything \u2013remain silent<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0the white person\u2019s guilt<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cross cultural training available and resources:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Increasing visibility in the institution; making indigenization a priority<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Students transferring from Aboriginal organization<\/b> into the larger institution it is a shock when no characterization of indigeneity exists<\/li>\n<li>Some BC institutions embrace the <b>indigenous effort<\/b> and want the <b>programming<\/b> to be a success<\/li>\n<li>.
