Can we change education to benefit the community, not just the individual? (Getting the individual to change the community would be transforming)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Challenges students face<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need to know what you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">don\u2019t<\/span> know about the challenges students face before you can help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Ceremonial activities<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ceremonial activities, like sweats, are important to indigenizing the academy, because they convey the spiritual component and basis for \u201cgood heart &amp; good mind\u201d. They can be healing for participants, overcoming fears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Allies and Champions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s a multi-step process \u2013 we need champions and allies at different stages of the educational process. From HR point of view, how can we help share learning, with each other, with new hires?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Population<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aboriginals comprise 3% of Canadian population (BC is almost half of that total)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Poverty<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>85% are below the poverty line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Levels of education<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>47% complete K \u2013 12 system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Foster care<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>53% of children in foster care system are aboriginal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Prison population<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>40% of prison population is aboriginal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Rebuilding Extended family crucial<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the past, grandparents, aunts &amp; uncles raised the children. Rebuilding extended family is crucial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Family structure and Preparedness for university<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maybe white society needs to rebuild its family structure too. Get away from \u2018me\u2019 and back to \u2018we\u2019. Not just in the aboriginal community, but wider community as well. Do kids have a strong foundation when they start education? Do college students struggle financially and resist asking for help? Do kids get taught that when you have work to do, you get it done?<\/li>\n<li>Helping students learn to be away from home is an important form of support for those going on to post-secondary education. This can go right to the level of familiar food, activities, in first steps away from home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Knowledge of one\u2019s culture important<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(Combined from several people) It\u2019s hard to hold dear what you haven\u2019t had handed down to you \u2013 several participants had grown up without knowing their background or learning their culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tokenism\/rethink the system\/University as part of community<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we get past tokenism and rethink the system? Maybe viewing the university as contributing to the community will help break down the barriers<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Feminist and aboriginal research methods<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The shift in feminist &amp; aboriginal research methods is an important shift from working <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">on<\/span> people to working <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">with<\/span> them and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">for<\/span> them, learning from their qualitative experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Audience engagement<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The quality of speech and the audience engagement in the traditional space this morning was impressive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Practicality of working groups\/content experts<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to underestimate the challenges involved<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think about working groups as a practical step, bringing together people who can apply their content knowledge to solve problems in that area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Personal &amp; Institutional Reflections on Indigenizing the Academy Workshop Breakout I Breakout Group 5 (UFV Caucus) Indigenizing Challenges It\u2019s easy to underestimate the challenges involved Family function and influence \u00a0Can we make education a better experience by understanding how the family has evolved, and what it takes to make the families functional?
