Van Ingen is an academic who believes in empowering women to overcome adversity through sport. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">An associate professor in Kinesiology at<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webmail.ufv.ca\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=gNCfgbbtLzxMm-oH1zjwb0w9tFCbW4ZtBnPmcvuswF_AkSXwZIjVCA..&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fbrocku.ca%2fapplied-health-sciences%2fkinesiology%2ffaculty-research%2ffaculty-directory%2fcathy-van-ingen-phd%2f%231495988343308-80fccfb2-7cbd2bb4-a010bd9b-76300f7d-2be59f93-7b75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Brock University<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">, van Ingen is a former boxer, and co-founder of the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webmail.ufv.ca\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=1LRsNz325T9a_FVhgR6SV-VKxkJIWIu6Nrota0y7tFzAkSXwZIjVCA..&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.shapeyourlifeboxing.com%2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Shape Your Life program<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">, which is a<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span lang=\"en-CA\"> free non-contact boxing program for female-identified survivors of violence that runs out of a boxing club in the west end of Toronto.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-531\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/bio-vanIngen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-531\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/bio-vanIngen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/bio-vanIngen.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/bio-vanIngen-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Cathy van Ingen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Dr. van Ingen will speak on the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webmail.ufv.ca\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=bo3svSOqa319uquUMCW9RsY-sP2oQ4DwcEvLa8e7vuTAkSXwZIjVCA..&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fwww.youtube.com%2fwatch%3fv%3dWQthEa-HfmA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Shape Your Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">program as part of the Health Sciences Dean\u2019s Speaker Series during the UFV Health and Wellness Expo on Mon, March 26 at noon.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0She<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"> will speak in the Aboriginal Gathering Place on the Chilliwack campus<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"> The event is open to all faculty, staff, and students, and the public is welcome.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Dean of Health Sciences Joanne MacLean is excited about welcoming her former colleague to the UFV Chilliwack campus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\">\u201cI have long admired Dr. van Ingen\u2019s work. Her research seeks to improve the lives of women, connecting the power of physical activity to improving the health of those who have experienced violence. Cathy&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma\">perseverance in developing and funding the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma\"><i>Shape Your Life<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma\"> program is extraordinary. I look forward to welcoming Dr. van Ingen to campus and having her share her work with our community&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">A\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">leading <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">social change researcher with work in areas of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">gender-based violence, sport, trauma-informed physical activity, geographies of sport, sport media, and youth<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">, van Ingen investigates the relationship between sport, health, inequality, and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">culture<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">She holds a PhD in Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Alberta, and has held academic positions at the University of Manitoba, the University of Alberta, and Brock University.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Over the course of 11 years, van Ingen and her colleagues from Shape Your Life have supported over 1, 600 women.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Dr. v<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">an Ingen has long been empowering women who have experienced violence to take back their bodies through sport. \u201cTrauma is rooted in survivor\u2019s bodies,\u201d she notes.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Shape Your Life is not teaching women how to fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">It is founded on the idea that women and female identified transgender survivors of violence can connect to their bodies, be in control, learn about themselves, and channel anger in a productive way, within a sport that did not\u00a0support amateur female participation in Canada until 1991.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">Having control is really\u00a0important when you have\u00a0experienced violence and all the coaches understand that\u00a0participants\u00a0might need different approaches sometimes,\u201d van Ingen says. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-528 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2018\/03\/2-torontonewsgirlsboxingclub-4164802058-environment-e1429036219363-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cShape Your Life is trauma\u00a0informed,\u201d notes van Ingen,\u00a0\u201cwhich\u00a0means that our staff and coaches understand that people\u2019s past trauma might affect them in\u00a0different\u00a0ways while they are boxing. Some might come to the gym\u00a0exceptionally\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">anxious, or be in a state of hyper-arousal where it is difficult for them to trust that they will be safe. We make sure our coaches and staff\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">understand, recognize, and know how to respond to the different ways people\u00a0experience\u00a0the effects of trauma and violence.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">While participants have been impacted by various forms of violence, they are not down for the count.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Through the Shape Your Life program, women and transgender people who have survived experiences of sexual, emotional or physical trauma are encouraged to use boxing\u00a0as a way to positively dismiss fear and let out anger.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">SYL is not about talking, but about bodywork, and that is a very\u00a0different\u00a0way to work\u00a0with\u00a0people who have\u00a0experienced\u00a0violence. Participants are not treated like clients in a social work setting, and they are not asked to disclose any experiences of violence, something that is normally required during the intake process of a lot of programs offered to women,\u201d says van Ingen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">The program does not fall neatly into traditional practices of talk therapy, and it challenges narrow conceptions about how women should express their emotions and anger. \u201cThat opportunity is there for men in a lot of ways, but there are very few places and spaces where women are encouraged to use their aggression productively,\u201d van Ingen says. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Recently, the Shape Your Life project received $420, 000 in funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
