Those suffering from chronic pain, hope this perception changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing awareness and visibility to the reality of living with chronic pain was important to the participants in this project,\u201d says JoAnne Nelmes, a Nursing faculty member at UFV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChronic pain required visibility and participants felt telling their stories would assist community members to understand their challenge of coping with daily pain and fatigue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each unique story conveyed the inner strength and resilience of participants \u2014 a snapshot of the daily fight to overcome physical, psychological and social barriers.[quote]\u201cTo me life is not about an absence of pain, it\u2019s about an ability to be working, to continue doing the things I enjoy,\u201d anonymous research participant from Nelmes&#8217; study.[\/quote]<\/p>\n<p>Once Nelmes started teaching about chronic pain, she realized that this invisible disability impacted members of her own family. Her passion turned into a research project in June 2015, where she quickly realized that age is just a number when it comes to chronic pain.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic pain is a disease that impacts individuals of all ages, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/pub\/82-003-x\/2010004\/article\/11389-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Community Health Survey from 2007\/2008<\/a> reported that about one in ten Canadians aged 12-44 experienced chronic pain.<\/p>\n<p>In the study conducted by Nelmes, participants ranged from 24 to 81 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 20 volunteer participants interviewed for the study, six had chronic pain resulting from illness while 14 developed chronic pain due to accident or injury.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-364\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/12\/chronic-pain-study-elise-st-martin-wp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-364\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/12\/chronic-pain-study-elise-st-martin-wp.jpg\" alt=\"Elise St. Martin, UFV BA Student (pictured above) instrumental in the banner design and has assisted in promoting understanding and awareness along with JoAnne.\" width=\"319\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/12\/chronic-pain-study-elise-st-martin-wp.jpg 650w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/12\/chronic-pain-study-elise-st-martin-wp-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Elise St. Martin, UFV BA Student (pictured above) was instrumental in the banner design and has assisted in promoting understanding and awareness along with Nelmes.<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI felt people living with chronic pain needed a voice in the community who could advocate for them; dispel the negative associations and further understanding of chronic pain,\u201d says Nelmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy next step is to focus on levels and types of activity that positively influence persistent pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To date, this\u00a0research has been shared as a poster presentation at the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) in Toronto.
