If you are not checking your blood pressure regularly, you could be at risk of heart disease and not even know it.<\/p>\n<p>Due to infrequent blood pressure monitoring, hypertension has earned the name as the silent killer. Retief, Amber Johnston and Michael Covey)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On May 17, UFV kinesiology facilitated a blood pressure testing and information session for more than 45 City of Chilliwack employees.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Chilliwack challenged their employees to take the Move for Health initiative to the next level and assessing their cardiovascular health is one way of doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove for health is an initiative to encourage social interaction to make our employees aware of health concerns and the benefits of being active,\u201d explained Carolyn Marleau, Manager of Leisure Development at the City of Chilliwack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeams are created for a little friendly competition that have each team member log fitness activities for a two-week period with activities being measured in meters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For attending planned events such as blood pressure testing, employees receive an additional 500 meters to add to their total.<\/p>\n<p>However, the benefits extend well beyond the 500-meter incentive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/amber-move-for-health.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/amber-move-for-health.jpg\" alt=\"amber-move-for-health\" width=\"297\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/amber-move-for-health.jpg 432w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/amber-move-for-health-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a>\u201cT<span class=\"s1\">oday is all about creating awareness around risk factor management and prevention<\/span>,\u201d said Amber Johnston, the kinesiology faculty member coordinating the testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"s1\">We want to educate people\u00a0to understand\u00a0their blood pressure measurements, and the simple lifestyle modifications that can be taken to prevent future complications, or to help gain control of\u00a0their levels and bring them back within normal ranges.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Hypertension Society reports that 9 out of 10 Canadians may develop high blood pressure unless they adopt a healthy lifestyle. Hypertension is a multifaceted condition with a number of risk factors that can be minimized with simple\u00a0lifestyle modifications.<\/p>\n<p>These include eating a balanced low-sodium diet, getting the daily dose of recommended physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight, smoking cessation, and reducing stress.<\/p>\n<p>Two kinesiology students had the opportunity to\u00a0gain valuable hands on experience, getting practice taking blood pressure measurements and sharing their knowledge on lifestyle modification practices and management.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/jp-move-for-health.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-196\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/jp-move-for-health.jpg\" alt=\"jp-move-for-health\" width=\"320\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/jp-move-for-health.jpg 412w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/jp-move-for-health-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt was a great way to help individuals and share our expertise in the field of health,\u201d\u00a0said P.J. Retief, a fourth-year kinesiology student focusing on exercise science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a student the biggest thing is getting more involved\u00a0to practise what we have learned in class and apply it to a real setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time that UFV has worked with the City of Chilliwack on this initiative, but building relationships within the community is a rewarding way to share the university&#8217;s health expertise with the local community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/mike-move-for-health.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-197 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/mike-move-for-health.jpg\" alt=\"mike-move-for-health\" width=\"248\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/mike-move-for-health.jpg 432w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/files\/2016\/05\/mike-move-for-health-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThis was a chance to get practical experience to work on building professional relationships and proper etiquette when working with real clients,\u201d commented Michael Covey, a fourth-year kinesiology student focusing on exercise science.<\/p>\n<p>So what can you do to be heart healthy? Start keeping\u00a0track of your heart health and risk factors. If you don&#8217;t check your blood pressure regularly, schedule a visit to your family physician or drop into your local pharmacy to take a measurement \u2014 your heart will thank you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When was the last time you checked your blood pressure?
