{"id":1391,"date":"2026-06-29T13:33:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/?p=1391"},"modified":"2026-06-29T13:33:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:33:02","slug":"eleven-ufv-graduates-land-spots-in-competitive-ubc-physiotherapy-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/health\/eleven-ufv-graduates-land-spots-in-competitive-ubc-physiotherapy-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Eleven UFV graduates land spots in competitive UBC physiotherapy program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post was originally published <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/blog\/2026\/06\/ten-ufv-graduates-land-spots-in-competitive-ubc-physiotherapy-program\/\">here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A group of 11 students graduating from the University of the Fraser Valley with kinesiology degrees are making the leap to graduate school, landing together in the University of British Columbia\u2019s physiotherapy program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The students heading to UBC are Nic Shain, Shawn Arora, Trinity Nacario, Megan Filiatrault, Ajaiveer Boparai, Samnit Sidhu, Armaan Gill, Tobias Siebenga, Drew Shannon, Owen Swan, and Samantha Boyd.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Megan says\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0incredibly excited.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt almost doesn\u2019t feel real,\u201d she says. \u201cThroughout my time at UFV, I\u2019ve been working toward this goal through research, community engagement, and hands-on experiences, so being accepted into UBC\u2019s program feels both validating and motivating.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Getting into the program is an achievement, with UBC accepting 143 students per year. Having 11 from one school is notable. Michael Gaetz, UFV\u2019s kinesiology program director, says it\u2019s a testament to the teaching excellence and quality education provided by the university.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAcceptance into UBC\u2019s\u00a0physiotherapy program is difficult because they receive a high number of excellent applications from across Canada and internationally. To have this number of UFV kinesiology students accepted into their program speaks to the accomplishments of the students and the reputation of our school for producing graduates that will excel. We\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0be prouder of them.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At UFV, the students explored how the body moves and how it can be\u00a0optimized\u00a0for health, performance, and overall wellness. They learned foundational topics such as human anatomy, sport psychology, biomechanics, and human nutrition, as well as physical activity, health, and fitness.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ajaiveer, who played on UFV\u2019s men\u2019s soccer squad, says the curriculum gave him\u00a0a strong foundation\u00a0in areas like anatomy, physiology, and exercise science, which are essential for physiotherapy. But it was the small class sizes and close connection to professors that allowed him to develop critical thinking skills, confidence, and interpersonal skills. Those skills, he says, will serve him well at UBC, and in the career that follows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tobias Siebenga agrees, saying UFV offers a unique combination with faculty members who are at the top of their respective academic fields and care deeply about teaching and the growth of their students. The result, he suggests, is a rigorous but rewarding education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think many students who go through this program can attest to how accessible faculty members are for support, not just in course-specific questions, but also any general interests in the field or even career-related questions,\u201d he says. \u201cI can\u2019t overstate how this program feels like a group of\u00a0faculty\u00a0who could easily be doing their research at the largest institutions in the country but instead are choosing to nurture and pour their expertise into their students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As\u00a0she prepares for the next step in her\u00a0academic journey, Armaan says it means the world to do so with people\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0learned and grown with at UFV.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFrom first-year courses and study groups to now applying to this program together, we have supported each other every step of the way. Knowing there were such limited spots could have easily created competition between peers, but this group consistently leaned on one another and supported each other through both our time at UFV and the admissions process.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Samnit\u00a0says\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0motivating to be surrounded by students who share the same goals and drive for helping people, and her\u00a0lasting impression\u00a0of UFV will be the\u00a0strong sense\u00a0of community she found within the program, from her peers and professors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI will also remember the change I went through during my academic journey and how UFV reshaped the way I think about change,\u201d\u00a0Samnit\u00a0says. \u201cI learned to accept and welcome it rather than fear it.
