The class erupts into shouts and applause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d says John, \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor John Carroll\u2019s Seminar in Creative Writing (English 405) is unlike any other course offered this term: over the course of the winter semester, 21 students will work to complete their manuscripts \u2013 20 novels, and one play. Their deadlines are determined by the students themselves, but they receive guidance, feedback, and encouragement from their in-class workshop groups and John himself. \u201cEvery one of them by the end of term should have a completed piece of writing they can be proud of,\u201d John explains.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, they also read, present on, and discuss a number of published novels. John directed each of the groups to pick two novels from a list; two members of the group would read one novel, and two would read the other, and the group would plan a joint presentation about the works. \u201cThese presentations were remarkably successful, innovative, and provocative,\u201d John reports. \u201cSome ran for almost two hours before I had finally to stop them. The level of learning through this kind of \u2018play\u2019 was intense and palpable, and exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-75\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"English blog 405 students and John\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/03\/English-blog-405-students-and-John-200x150.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aside from smaller class size, more intimate discussion, and deeper exploration of literary themes, concerns, and craft, the level of responsibility the students take for their own learning is one of the main differences between 400-level seminars and other upper-level English courses. \u201cStudents are expected to take the lead in class discussions,\u201d says John; for this reason, \u201cthey are exceptionally motivated and energetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what accounts for the incredible dynamism in the classroom? \u201cI asked the students this question,\u201d says John. \u201cTheir response was that they had chosen the class because writing was their passion and something they wanted to pursue\u2026. I like to think also that by my giving them the freedom to, as much as possible, direct their own learning, they were able to seize that opportunity and make the best of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds: \u201cI can truthfully say that this seminar was one of the highlights of my teaching experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keep your eyes on the prize (well, the UFV timetable, anyway) for future seminar offerings.
