After researching the topic for years, in 2015 she\u2019s bringing it to life here at UFV. The Great War forever changed the world; UFV events enable students, faculty, and community members to experience the impact of those changes.<\/p>\n<p>First, a representation of a trench was constructed on the UFV Abbotsford campus. You can still check it out\u2014near the library. Don\u2019t let this sunny, pastoral photo fool you, though\u2014so profound were the horrifying trench mud and overcrowding during the war that they\u2019re still being <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiction_based_on_World_War_I\" target=\"_blank\">explored in film and literature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-226\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Great War trench reconstruction\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-trench-reconstruction.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, the English Students\u2019 Association co-hosted a <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ufv.ca\/events\/ufv-student-conference-the-great-war-local-beyond\/\">student conference<\/a> on September 29th: \u201cThe Great War: Local and Beyond.\u201d Besides a poster display, documentary screenings, and a welcome by the Associate Dean of Faculty, there were also seven student presentations. Keynote speaker Dr. Manav Ratti from Salisbury University put a captivating spin on the whole event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-227\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Great War student conference\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Great-War-student-conference.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the visually inclined, Dr. Parmar curated an exhibit at <a href=\"http:\/\/thereach.ca\/exhibitions\/past-exhibitions\" target=\"_blank\">The Reach Gallery<\/a>: &#8220;Ready and True, India and the Great War&#8221; (September 25th through October 4th). The event showcased unique archival documents including photographs, art, writings, and newspaper clippings to provide a visual chronicle commemorating the almost forgotten contribution of Indian soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-228\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Reach Great War Exhibit\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/english\/files\/2015\/10\/Reach-Great-War-Exhibit.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even if you missed those events, you can still catch the <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ufv.ca\/events\/india-and-the-great-war-memory-memorialization-commemoration-2015-10-24\/\" target=\"_blank\">big commemoration this week<\/a>. <strong>The UFV College of Arts is presenting \u201cIndia and the Great War: Memory, Memorialization, Commemoration,\u201d a conference, exhibition, and performance. The FREE event runs from October 22-24 in UFV Abbotsford Student Union Building\u2019s Great Hall. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an impressive list of local experts speaking, as well as keynote speaker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/people\/singha\/aboutme.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Amritjit Singh<\/a>, Ohio University\u2019s Langston Hughes Professor of English and African American Studies.<\/p>\n<p>As all the events have been, this one promises to prove thought-provoking and inspirational\u2014to help us remember the magnitude of the war that changed the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; There&#8217;s a long literary history associated with World War I, so it&#8217;s no surprise the English department is involved in commemorating its centenary.
