English 405<\/a>, Seminar in Creative Writing, ran for the first time in Winter 2015. Nobody was surprised that Creative Writing prof extraordinaire John Carroll nurtured <\/a>some astounding talent there.<\/p>\n

And thank goodness they’re not hiding their little lights but letting them shine: Some of the former 405 gang are going public–sharing their writing with the community at an upcoming Creativalley<\/a> “Emerging Writers” event at The Reach<\/a> on Friday, October 2nd.<\/p>\n

You’ll hear Megan Barker, Bryce Orr, Julia Dovey, and Dustin Anderlini read their exciting new work. If you’re lucky, you’ll also hear John Carroll bragging about all that English 405 talent, because he’ll be there to emcee the event.<\/p>\n

Here’s what some 405 students had to say about the course:<\/p>\n

English 405 has been the best course I have ever attended in my life . . . . I now have a full manuscript I can edit and edit and edit again. What I wanted to achieve, I achieved . . . . I really learned a lot about my own writing from this course. ~ Michael Ray Blackburn<\/p>\n

This class was huge for growth. I learned a lot about the different ways people write, and how to look at a novel from a writer’s perspective, not just a reader’s. ~ Elizabeth Avery<\/p>\n

This has been the toughest, yet most rewarding project I have ever completed. Though I told myself throughout the entire semester that I would accomplish this, I would finish the draft of my first novel, I did not believe it myself until today when it was printed and bound in front of me . . . . I’ve always wanted to be a writer, since I was a child, but after my first year [in the writing program] at UVic . . . I vowed never to write again. It took quite a few years and a lot of pain before I could put a pen to paper and write for myself. And this year, I wrote a book. ~ J. I. Milliken<\/p>\n
