Surprise!<\/p>\n<p>But what we lack in unexpectedness we make up for in productivity. There was a lot going on . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Carroll<\/strong> reports that he continued to work on his novel(s). Immersed in the lifelong learning process, he \u201clearned how to write . . . by writing!\u201d The summer was full of creative ups and downs; he alternately \u201chated my writing, loved my writing, hated my writing, loved my writing . . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rajnish Dhawan<\/strong> came face to face with his demons and admitted, for once and for all, that he\u2019s a champion procrastinator. By swearing off several vices for the summer he was able to focus on multiple writing projects.<\/p>\n<p>The most urgent of these has been completing his play <em>Full House<\/em>, which focuses on terrorism. There was no wiggle room with this one: he\u2019s workshopping it at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereach.ca\/events-programs\" target=\"_blank\">The Reach<\/a> on September 30th!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of hard deadlines, <strong>Michelle Superle<\/strong> was motivated by her impending arrival from the stork to finish\u2014after five years\u2014her literary fiction novel, <em>Oh, Little Orchard Town<\/em>. What a relief! Summer favourites included<em> I\u2019ll Give You the Sun<\/em> by Jandy Nelson, <em>The Wild Oats Project<\/em> by Robin Rinaldi, <em>Wolf Hall<\/em> by Hilary Mantel, <em>Vanessa and Her Sister<\/em> by Priya Parmar, <em>Operating Instructions<\/em> by Anne Lamott, and <em>The Penderwicks<\/em> by Jeanne Birdsall\u2014as eclectic a list as always!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carl Peters<\/strong> put the finishing touches on his new book out this Fall from <a href=\"http:\/\/talonbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Talonbooks<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/talonbooks.com\/books\/studies-in-description\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Studies in Description: Reading Gertrude Stein&#8217;s Tender Buttons<\/em><\/a>. Talonbooks is so impressed that they\u2019ve already accepted his next book project on T.S. She was a participant in <a href=\"http:\/\/theafterword.ca\/newspaper\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Afterword Reading Society<\/a> (National Post) for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/theafterword.ca\/2015\/07\/22\/close-to-hugh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Close to Hugh<\/a><\/em> by Marina Endicott. She reviewed several books for <a href=\"http:\/\/canlit.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Literature<\/a>: <em>How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun<\/em>? by Doretta Lau, <em>The Mountain Story<\/em> by Lori Lansens, and <em>Between<\/em> by Angie Abdou. She took a research trip to Kelowna and Kamloops, visiting the Westbank First Nation reserve, and Kamloops Indian Band reserve, for material for a work-in-progess\u2014a collection of poems exploring the residential school system. And, finally, she started work on a new novel-in-progress, exploring the early 1980&#8217;s in BC.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, she also found time to read!
