It\u2019s a question we\u2019ve all heard too many times. Too many people think we sit around in our ivory towers pontificating over poetry. Okay, we do that sometimes\u2014and we love it. But while we\u2019re at it, we\u2019re also becoming experts in textual analysis, critical thinking, and argument development.<\/p>\n

Then they spend all day in court building arguments to defend their clients. While poetry rarely features into this mix, the tasks lawyers perform are kissing cousins with those keeping literary scholars busy day and night.<\/p>\n So next time somebody asks how you\u2019ll earn a living with an English degree, you can tell them the truth: while you\u2019re busy doing what you love at school, you\u2019re honing some of the most in-demand, marketable skills in today\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n It\u2019s okay if you want to throw in a round of \u201cnyah nyah na poo poo\u201d while you\u2019re at it.
