{"id":1595,"date":"2019-01-28T15:32:05","date_gmt":"2019-01-28T23:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/?p=1595"},"modified":"2019-02-19T21:36:16","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T05:36:16","slug":"listening-from-an-unfamiliar-worldview-it-takes-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/2019\/01\/28\/listening-from-an-unfamiliar-worldview-it-takes-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Listening from an unfamiliar worldview: It takes practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOW RESCHEDULED: Monday Feb. 25, 2019<\/p>\n<p>Hot on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/2018\/10\/12\/abbotsford-international-dr-mai-anh-doan\/\">Dr. Mai Anh Doan&#8217;s<\/a> talk at the <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ufv.ca\/events\/scholarly-sharing-initiative-21\/\">Scholarly Sharing Initiative event this month about financial communication as it relates to crowd-sourced fundraising<\/a> you will have a chance to catch up on a research project undertaken by another member of the Communications department, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MLaFeverPhD.ca\">Dr. Marcella LaFever<\/a> at the upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ufv.ca\/events\/scholarly-sharing-initiative-22\/\">February 13 event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marcella, in examining the implications for herself to decolonize her communication practices, has focused her ongoing research program on listening to Indigenous voices that have been saying for a long time what colonizers need to do to change their attitudes and practices. Dr. LaFever\u2019s current work alongside Shirley Hardman (UFV&#8217;s Senior Advisor on Indigenous Affairs) investigates use of First Nation storytelling as a form of dialogic participation, specifically in relation to how stories were used by <a href=\"https:\/\/arcabc.ca\/islandora\/object\/tru%3A1136?solr_nav%5Bid%5D=c31303eaf8d20a9cfeaa&amp;solr_nav%5Bpage%5D=0&amp;solr_nav%5Boffset%5D=1\">Indigenous participants in submissions to the 2010 Cohen Commission on Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2019\/01\/salmon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1597 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2019\/01\/salmon-300x238.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2019\/01\/salmon-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2019\/01\/salmon-768x609.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2019\/01\/salmon.png 1008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a>The presentation for the Scholarly Sharing Initiative follows up on stories that were initially coded through use of St\u00f3:lo story types: Sqwelqwel (oral narratives relating to personal history) and Sxw\u00f4xwiy\u00e1m (oral histories that describe the distant past).
