Dr. Doan arrives with both practical and academic skills in Public Relations, Journalism, and Financial Communications.\u00a0 Her broad international experience includes Vietnam, where she grew up and completed her BA in Journalism at <a href=\"http:\/\/vnu.edu.vn\/eng\/\">Vietnam National University<\/a>; some time in Sweden, where she went to secondary school; a stint in Australia for her Master&#8217;s and then New Zealand for her Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">She says her own international experience helps her empathize with her students in the classroom, and she stresses the importance of crossing bridges between theoretical and practical knowledge and skills. She is constantly asking, \u201cHow does what we do in the classroom apply to everyday life&#8221;, to motivate students to learn better? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Mai Anh did her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uts.edu.au\/future-students\/communication\/postgraduate\/strategic-communication\">MA in Communication Management at the University of Technology, Sydney<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">, and her PhD at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikato.ac.nz\/\">University of Waikato<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, NZ, examining crowdfunding models for micro-investing. \u00a0After a successful stint as a journalist, and Public Relations manager for multinational corporations, she ran her own PR agency for several years. \u00a0She joined the Department of Communication at the University of the Fraser Valley this September and is already making an active contribution to the university and the community, serving on the board of organizers for an event to watch out for in the near future: Valley Fest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mai Anh\u2019s international background is reflected in her deep understanding of communications. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cI think\u201d, she says, with a quick, self-reflective nod, \u201cthat in a sense, communication is\u00a0universal. If it\u2019s based on <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">respect, genuineness<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, mutuality<\/span>, then it\u2019s good communication, no matter where it is practiced\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A warm Communications Department welcome to our new faculty member, Dr. Mai Anh Doan!
