Saying that CBC presenter Terry O\u2019Reilly<\/a>\u2019s recent visit to UFV was a success IS telling a tale out of school. And, it\u2019s a tale worth telling.<\/p>\n

UFV students, staff, faculty and community members from the lower mainland came together on Tuesday, March 1 in the Great Hall of UFV\u2019s new Student Union Building (the SUB) to hear Terry showcase some of his best stories and storytelling advice.<\/p>\n

Early in the day, Terry treated a very full house of students and their instructors to a private presentation on \u201cElevator Pitches\u201d. He thoroughly entertained with accounts of his past work experiences, marketing slogan successes, and colourful career highlights.<\/p>\n

He shared the highs and lows of his efforts to pitch his \u201cNo More Fiddling on the Roof\u201d campaign, and he encouraged students to persist in finding meaningful careers with a story about once sending out 60 resumes that returned\u00a061 rejection letters.<\/p>\n

Terry responded to UFV students\u2019 questions with great insights on the use of silence in presentations (he warned that \u201csilence smells like fear\u201d), the success of the Wheaties diamond campaign, and the role of elevator pitches in job interviews.<\/p>\n

Terry also emphasized the importance of \u201clearning by doing\u201d when public speaking. He expressed disappointment that presentation skills are not taught more often in advertising-related courses. Terry said students would benefit greatly from taking public speaking courses, and he complimented UFV for offering them.<\/p>\n

UFV students can take CMNS 235<\/a>, a popular public speaking class, as a separate course or as part of a Professional Communications Essentials Certificate<\/a> or a Communications Minor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An engaged audience of over 400 sharing the power of stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Terry returned to the stage in the afternoon to present \u201cThe Power of Storytelling\u201d. This talk was part of the UFV President\u2019s Leadership Lecture Series.<\/a><\/p>\n

He engaged and inspired the 400+ people in attendance with captivating stories of hit marketing campaigns and the principles behind them.\u00a0Those lucky enough to get a seat for the sold-out event probably found themselves sharing Terry\u2019s words later in the week \u2013 and are probably still sharing them.<\/p>\n

What Spock is to Kirk, reason is to feeling: stories must be understood and felt if they are to live long and prosper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Some of his memorable advice included:<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat things are not written they are rewritten.\u201d
\n\u201cStories resound for years or penetrate in seconds.\u201d
\n\u201cWords contain the seeds of change.\u201d
\n\u201cCustomer service IS marketing.\u201d
\n\u201cThe best marketers are the best listeners.\u201d
\n\u201cStorytelling makes people care.\u201d
\n\u201c\u2018It\u2019s good enough\u2019 is the enemy of everything.\u201d
\n\u201cMake people feel your message, not just understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n
