And, it\u2019s a tale worth telling.<\/p>\n<p>UFV students, staff, faculty and community members from the lower mainland came together on Tuesday, March 1 in the Great Hall of UFV\u2019s new Student Union Building (the SUB) to hear Terry showcase some of his best stories and storytelling advice.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the day, Terry treated a very full house of students and their instructors to a private presentation on \u201cElevator Pitches\u201d. He thoroughly entertained with accounts of his past work experiences, marketing slogan successes, and colourful career highlights.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1216\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1216\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Edu-tainment, courtesy of Terry O\u2019Reilly\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/cmns\/files\/2016\/03\/O27Reilly20pic203.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edu-tainment, courtesy of Terry O\u2019Reilly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He shared the highs and lows of his efforts to pitch his \u201cNo More Fiddling on the Roof\u201d campaign, and he encouraged students to persist in finding meaningful careers with a story about once sending out 60 resumes that returned\u00a061 rejection letters.<\/p>\n<p>Terry responded to UFV students\u2019 questions with great insights on the use of silence in presentations (he warned that \u201csilence smells like fear\u201d), the success of the Wheaties diamond campaign, and the role of elevator pitches in job interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Terry also emphasized the importance of \u201clearning by doing\u201d when public speaking. He expressed disappointment that presentation skills are not taught more often in advertising-related courses.
