{"id":123,"date":"2020-09-29T16:19:56","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T23:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/chasi\/?p=123"},"modified":"2021-01-15T16:59:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-16T00:59:42","slug":"orange-shirt-day-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/chasi\/2020\/09\/29\/orange-shirt-day-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Orange Shirt Day resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Orange Shirt Day, CHASI asked <strong>Shirley Hardman, UFV&#8217;s Senior Advisor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/indigenous\/\">Indigenous Affairs<\/a><\/strong> to recommend resources about the annual event, and specifically those useful in taking action toward truth and reconciliation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phyllis Webstad&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangeshirtday.org\">orangeshirtday.org<\/a> contains a lot of information about the annual day of recognition of residential school system harm, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangeshirtday.org\/phyllis-story.html\">Phyllis&#8217; story and the origin of the orange shirt<\/a>. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangeshirtday.org\/teacher-resources.html\">teacher resources<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Elementary Teachers&#8217; Federation of Ontario (ETFO\/FEEO) has a list of resources near the bottom of its <a href=\"https:\/\/etfo.ca\/BuildingAJustSociety\/FNMI\/pages\/orangeshirtday.aspx\">Orange Shirt Day webpage<\/a> with many resources, including Gord Downie&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/secretpath.ca\/\"><em>Secret Path<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Shirley also highly recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/sencanada.ca\/en\/senators\/sinclair-murray\/\">Senator Murray Sinclair<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thecurrent\/the-current-for-december-4-2018-1.4930506\/residential-school-survivors-stories-motivated-people-to-make-canada-better-says-murray-sinclair-1.4931409\">words on Truth and Reconciliation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohawkcollege.ca\/indigenous-students\/indigenous-student-events\/orange-shirt-day\">Mohawk College has a list of resources<\/a> as well, including websites of the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nctr.ca\/\">National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/trc.ca\/\">Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We would also like to direct people to UFV&#8217;s own Indigenous Affairs website, which is packed full of resources. In particular, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/indigenous\/resources\/challenges-quizzes\/\">reading challenges and quizzes<\/a> page links to a <a href=\"http:\/\/trcreadingchallenge.com\/\">Truth and Reconciliation pledge<\/a>, where participants commit to reading the TRC report (and can track and share their progress). Another great resource to meet the Truth and Reconciliation&#8217;s calls action and become educated about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/socdev\/unpfii\/documents\/DRIPS_en.pdf\">United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP)<\/a> is Ry Moran&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/next150.indianhorse.ca\/\">#NEXT150 Challenge<\/a>, where users sign up and are issued new challenges each week.
