There are locations at the Abbotsford (S1113) and Chilliwack (A1444) campuses.

Betty Peters, Director of the ISC, says “Indigenous learners on their educational journey at UFV often seek supports from the ISC. We create space for Elders and Knowledge keepers to engage and support students, staff and faculty in building community and fostering an understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and history. This ensures Indigenous learners are reflected and included in the everyday life of their university experience.”

The centres are home to a computer lab with internet access, and include Indigenous-focused books, videos, and other resource materials. They also offer computer workshops and tips for developing strong study skills. Students can access information on programs and courses, scholarships and bursaries, and assistance with application and admission processes. The ISC will also advocate for students on campus and be the liaison with various post-secondary authorities and First Nation organizations.

An invaluable benefit for students utilizing the ISC is fostering community. Students can work with a 3rd or 4th-year peer mentor and request a one-on-one meeting with an Elder for cultural guidance or to discuss a project or coursework. The centre’s cultural events are open to all students and include lunches, circle meetings, Elder visits, workshops, welcoming ceremonies, and more.

On the last Wednesday of every month, everyone is invited to join a chat about traditional storytelling practices. October 30’s theme is Indigenous Veterans Day. Visit the Chat-S event page for more details.

Faculty can also request Elder services for in-class support, Indigenous knowledge and cultural activities, and to attend meetings.
