This event brought together UFV faculty and students, members of the community, and a variety of perspectives on sustainability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/business\/2017\/05\/24\/2017-sustainable-development-essay-competition-winner-sarah-speight\/\">2017 Sustainable Development Essay Competition winner<\/a>, Sarah Speight, began the evening by presenting her proposal for an\u00a0Apiculture and employment program.<\/p>\n<p>St\u00f3:l\u014d Community Futures Community Resource Manager, Louis De Jaeger, spoke about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/videos\/search?q=elevator+stolo+means+business+youtube&amp;view=detail&amp;mid=9E5121AEC45A9C2AB65E9E5121AEC45A9C2AB65E&amp;FORM=VIRE\">St\u00f3:l\u014d strategic vision<\/a>, the importance of the entrepreneurial spirit, mentorship, and the ways in which the St\u00f3:l\u014d business community is working together to support Indigenous\u00a0businesses. Louis discussed the\u00a0St\u00f3:l\u014d Business Association&#8217;s focus on helping Indigenous\u00a0entrepreneurs develop their business\u00a0skills and the ways in which a better understanding of cultural differences and history can help forge partnerships between Indigenous\u00a0and non-Indigenous businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Jeanette Martin, the Building Materials Coordinator for the Upper Fraser Valley Habitat for Humanity Restore, spoke about the opportunities offered to families by Habitat and the ways in which the Restore plays a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LjOBeygBYPg\">vital role<\/a> in generating housing opportunities for families all over the world. This is an exciting time for Habitat for Humanity, as in honor of Canada&#8217;s 150th anniversary, they will be building <a href=\"http:\/\/www.habitat.ca\/150reasonstobuild\">150 homes across Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on behalf of the University of the Fraser Valley, School of Business, David Dobson, detailed his <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/business\/2017\/05\/14\/ufv-school-of-business-featured-on-united-nations-website\/\">integration of sustainability themed projects<\/a> into his research methods course. This presentation highlighted some of the most notable research projects done by students in this class, as well as discussed the challenges of guiding students through research of this nature.<\/p>\n<p>This well attended event proved to be\u00a0an excellent opportunity for UFV and Fraser Valley Stakeholders to\u00a0make connections and exchange ideas on how the local community can work towards sustainability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Thursday May 18, 2018, marked the UFV School of Business&#8217; first Sustainable Development Symposium.
