{"id":8744,"date":"2015-08-20T11:30:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T18:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/?p=8744"},"modified":"2015-08-28T08:05:27","modified_gmt":"2015-08-28T15:05:27","slug":"cascades-womens-basketball-team-adds-veteran-seasoning-to-recruiting-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/2015\/08\/20\/cascades-womens-basketball-team-adds-veteran-seasoning-to-recruiting-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Cascades women\u2019s basketball team adds veteran seasoning to recruiting class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The reigning PacWest conference MVP, a former Canada West rookie of the year, and a CIS national all-tournament honouree headline a veteran-laden crew of incoming players for head coach Al Tuchscherer and the University of the Fraser Valley women\u2019s basketball program.<br \/>\nThe aforementioned accolades were earned, respectively, by Shayna Cameron, Sydney Williams and Kayli Sartori \u2013 all of whom have extensive post-secondary basketball experience under their belts already. Natajia McMillan, an outstanding guard out of Renton High School in Washington state, also committed to the Cascades recently and becomes Tuchscherer\u2019s first-ever recruit from south of the border.<br \/>\nThose four players join three previously announced recruits \u2013 Taylor Claggett (5\u201911\u201d forward, Abbotsford, Mennonite Educational Institute), Kate Head (5\u20199\u201d point guard, Maple Ridge Secondary) and Amanda Thompson (5\u201910\u201d guard, Abbotsford, W.J. Mouat Secondary) \u2013 to comprise the Cascades\u2019 incoming class of 2015.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s a group that has a lot of veteran experience, and a lot of young talent,\u201d enthused Tuchscherer, who is heading into his 14th season at the helm of the Cascades. \u201cThere\u2019s a ton of potential to be competitive quite quickly.\u201d<br \/>\nCameron, a Chilliwack Secondary graduate, returns home to the Fraser Valley for her fifth and final season of eligibility following a memorable four-year run at Quest University in Squamish. The 5\u20199\u201d shooting guard is coming off back-to-back PacWest titles and CCAA national tournament appearances with the Kermodes, and she racked up a bushel of individual awards along the way. Among the baubles she collected in 2015: the PacWest\u2019s female athlete of the year award across all sports, the Basketball BC college female athlete of the year award, and a CCAA All-Canadian nod.<br \/>\n\u201cShayna had a fantastic college career at Quest,\u201d Tuchscherer said of Cameron, who averaged 17.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game last season. \u201cShe\u2019s a highly skilled player who can shoot the ball and approaches the game with a lot of maturity. Her leadership is going to be instrumental in our success this year.\u201d<br \/>\nWilliams had a sparkling high school career at Langley\u2019s Brookswood Secondary \u2013 she was a first team all-star at the 2013 B.C. AAA high school provincials as her Brookswood Bobcats finished second. She had an outstanding Canada West debut the following season with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, averaging 7.4 points and 6.0 rebounds en route to conference rookie of the year honours. The sharpshooting Williams ranked eighth in Canada West in three-pointers made with 42, and shot 31.3 per cent from beyond the arc.<br \/>\n\u201cSydney is a fantastic athlete, a hard worker, plays with a lot of determination, and can really shoot the basketball,\u201d Tuchscherer said. \u201cI\u2019m really excited to have her join our program. She\u2019s a player that\u2019s had success in Canada West already, and she\u2019ll be an impact player immediately.\u201d<br \/>\nAfter taking last season off, Sartori returns to the Cascades build on an already-formidable legacy. The versatile 6\u20190\u201d forward was a high school standout at Abbotsford\u2019s Mouat Secondary, leading the Hawks to gold at the 2011 B.C. AAA provincials and earning tournament MVP honours. She then moved across town to UFV and helped the Cascades to three straight Canada West Final Fours, culminating in a conference silver medal and a CIS bronze medal in 2014. She was the third-highest scorer on the Cascades\u2019 stacked 2013-14 squad, averaging 10.2 points per game along with 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m excited to have Kayli back,\u201d Tuchscherer said. \u201cShe\u2019s a proven force in Canada West and had three tremendous years here. We\u2019re looking forward to continuing that after a year off.\u201d<br \/>\nMcMillan, a 5\u20199\u201d guard, stuffed the stat sheet on behalf of Renton High School last season, racking up 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game.<br \/>\n\u201cNatajia brings something different to our team,\u201d Tuchscherer said. \u201cShe plays with creativity and has some fantastic basketball instincts. She\u2019s a great athlete, and she has potential to make an impact on our program right out of the gate, as well.\u201d<br \/>\nUnder Tuchscherer\u2019s tutelage, the Cascades have established themselves as a perennial contender in Canada West.
