UFV wrestler Manheet Kahlon earned a silver medal at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championships, hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton on the weekend.
\nKahlon, competing in the men\u2019s heavyweight (120 kg) division, battled his way to the final, where he fell to Kyle Nguyen of the Winnipeg Wesmen, last year\u2019s CIS silver medalist.
\nKahlon and Nguyen have had quite a rivalry this season. Kahlon won their first three meetings, at the Calgary Dinos Classic, the University of Alberta\u2019s Golden Bear Open, and UFV\u2019s own Cascades Classic. But Nguyen emerged victorious at both the Canada West and CIS championships.
\n\u201cIt was a good rivalry,\u201d noted Kahlon, a first-year varsity wrestler from Surrey. \u201cTowards the end (of the year), I\u2019m not sure what happened. The results just weren\u2019t in my favour.
\n\u201cBut I\u2019m a first-year student, so it was pretty good (to win national silver). I still have three or four years ahead of me, and I\u2019m hoping for gold in the future.\u201d
\nFellow UFV wrestler Brad Hildenbrandt also attended the CIS nationals, and he grappled his way to a 1-3 record in the 90 kg men\u2019s class, good for fifth place.
\n\u201cI feel I could have done better, but I guess for my first year, it wasn\u2019t bad,\u201d said Hildenbrandt, who was coming off a silver-medal performance at the Canada West championships. \u201cIt was good to get experience at a higher level of competition than I\u2019m used to, with people from all across Canada, not just Canada West.\u201d
\n\u201cWhat a tremendous accomplishment for these talented wrestlers,\u201d Cascades interim athletic director Chris Bertram said. \u201cThe UFV Athletics department is proud of Manheet and Brad for their accomplishments this entire season and their strong showing at the CIS national championships.\u201d<\/p>\n
