{"id":6606,"date":"2015-01-26T13:12:11","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T21:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/?p=6606"},"modified":"2015-01-29T11:26:04","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T19:26:04","slug":"cascades-weekend-recap-hoopsters-make-more-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/2015\/01\/26\/cascades-weekend-recap-hoopsters-make-more-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Cascades weekend recap: Hoopsters make more history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams combined for a clean sweep of the UBC Okanagan Heat on the weekend, and carved out a bit of history along the way.<br \/>\n\u2022 Sarah Wierks of the Cascades women\u2019s basketball team authored a pair of dominant performances in wins on Friday (70-67) and Saturday (77-65) over the Heat as UFV improved to 8-6 on the season. The 6\u20192\u201d fifth-year centre from Chilliwack racked up 22 points and 18 rebounds in the opener, and posted 22 points, 19 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals in the rematch.<br \/>\nIn the process, Wierks moved into second place on the Canada West all-time rebounding list, leapfrogging Janis Paskevich, who collected 912 boards during her career with the Calgary Dinos (1977-1982). Wierks is now at 945 total rebounds, second only to former Saskatchewan Huskie Sarah Crooks (1,181).<br \/>\nThe weekend also featured a notable performance from third-year power forward Katie Brink, who exploded for a career-high 27 points on Saturday.<br \/>\n\u2022 The UFV men\u2019s hoopsters extended their Canada West regular season win streak to 28 games, beating UBC-O 73-66 on Friday and 79-65 on Saturday.<br \/>\nFifth-year centre Jasper Moedt came up with huge double-doubles both nights, notching 16 points and 17 rebounds in the first game and 17 points and 15 boards in the rematch. Kevon Parchment also had a big weekend, tying Moedt for team-high honours with 16 points on Friday and pouring in a game-high 19 points on Saturday.<br \/>\nThe Cascades (14-0) are ranked No. 7 in the CIS.<br \/>\n\u2022 In a clash of nationally ranked women\u2019s volleyball teams, UFV battled the Vancouver Island University Mariners to a split.<br \/>\nOn Friday, the CCAA No. 9-ranked Cascades won the first two sets, only to watch the No. 13 Mariners come roaring back to win the next two and force a fifth and deciding set. UFV pulled through with a 15-12 win, though, as Rachel Funk finish things off with two clutch kills.<br \/>\nVIU bounced back to win in four sets on Saturday, despite solid performances from Cascades middle Emily Carroll (a team-high 11 total points) and libero Amy Davidson (15 digs). UFV is 10-8 on the season, good for third in the PacWest conference.<br \/>\n\u2022 The UFV men\u2019s volleyball team played the No. 7-ranked team in the nation awfully tough, but ended up on the wrong end of a weekend sweep.<br \/>\nThe Cascades to<\/p>\n<p>ok the first two sets in the opener, but the Mariners clawed all the way back to win in five. It was a similar story on Saturday, as UFV won the first set but VIU rallied to claim the victory in four.<br \/>\nThe Cascades sit fifth in the PacWest at 6-12.<br \/>\n\u2022 Looking ahead, this coming week\u2019s schedule is highlighted by the first-ever home tournament hosted by the UFV wrestling program.<br \/>\nThe Cascades Classic is set for Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Envision Athletic Centre, beginning at 9 am and running until roughly 2 pm.
