{"id":5277,"date":"2014-10-16T13:42:09","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T20:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/?p=5277"},"modified":"2014-10-23T13:00:25","modified_gmt":"2014-10-23T20:00:25","slug":"telford-quoted-in-chilliwack-times-story-on-voter-apathy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/2014\/10\/16\/telford-quoted-in-chilliwack-times-story-on-voter-apathy\/","title":{"rendered":"Telford quoted in Chilliwack Times story on voter apathy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political science professor <strong>Hamish Telford<\/strong> was quoted in an Oct 9 article in the <em>Chilliwack Times<\/em> about voter apathy in municipal elections.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an excerpt from Paul Henderson&#8217;s story, quoting Telford on student awareness:<\/p>\n<p>Telford said he taught three classes on Canadian politics last term\u2014probably 110 students\u2014and as a big, bad professor he made his students read a national newspaper, either the <em>National Post<\/em> or the <em>Globe and Mail.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked how many of them are regular readers and out of 110 there was one, a senior citizen,\u201d he said. \u201cThat was it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Telford said young people choose to use their devices for other purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot many of them are on Twitter and if they are, they are following Justin Bieber not you or me or Andrew Coyne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the solution? Telford doesn\u2019t offer an easy one. Civic engagement, however it\u2019s done, is critical.<\/p>\n<p>Telford&#8217;s new book, <em>Rules of the Game: An Introduction to Canadian Politics<\/em>, takes a look at the democratic deficit locally, in B.C. and across Canada.
