{"id":4267,"date":"2014-07-17T11:05:56","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T18:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/?p=4267"},"modified":"2014-07-23T22:40:48","modified_gmt":"2014-07-24T05:40:48","slug":"ufvs-raj-virdi-to-coach-in-bc-summer-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/announce\/2014\/07\/17\/ufvs-raj-virdi-to-coach-in-bc-summer-games\/","title":{"rendered":"UFV\u2019s Raj Virdi to coach in BC Summer Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A selection of elite <strong>Fraser Valley wrestlers<\/strong> will be traveling to <strong>Nanaimo<\/strong> this week to participate in the <strong>2014 BC Summer Games<\/strong>, and they\u2019ll be bringing a potent weapon in coach <strong>Raj Virdi<\/strong> \u2014 a Canadian wrestling champion turned UFV varsity coach. Virdi, who co-coaches the <strong>UFV CIS wrestling program <\/strong>alongside <strong>Arjan Bhullar<\/strong>, is this year\u2019s choice to lead the Fraser Valley zone contingent in the Games, his first such selection in his coaching career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going be a good experience because I\u2019m going to get in touch with a lot of the best female and male athletes in the Fraser Valley,\u201d said <strong>Virdi<\/strong>. \u201cThese athletes have been working very hard in the last couple weeks, and I am sure that they will excel in the Summer Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virdi <\/strong>is very excited by the opportunity, especially because it will allow him to hone his skills coaching high-level female wrestling. \u201cI\u2019ve worked with the kids individually before, but now we\u2019re working as a team,\u201d said <strong>Virdi<\/strong>. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of the athletes and the excellence they\u2019ve shown in reaching this level of competition. I am very excited about the growth of wrestling in the Valley, and as we develop a new generation of elite wrestlers in the area I can\u2019t help but be very positive about the future of UFV\u2019s wrestling program as well!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virdi <\/strong>is a former member of the Canadian national team, a recipient of four international medals, and a former <strong>CIS Rookie of the Year<\/strong>, individual champion, and three-time <strong>All-Canadian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>2014 BC Summer Games<\/strong> will be hosted in <strong>Nanaimo<\/strong> from <strong>July 17-20<\/strong>, and will involve as many as <strong>2,914 athletes<\/strong> between the ages of 10 and 19 as well as almost <strong>600 coaches<\/strong>.
