Chilliwack City Councillor Jason Lum and UFV\u2019s Dr. Lenore Newman are the featured speakers at the next Science Caf\u00e9, taking place Wednesday, April 2 from 10:30 am to noon in the library on the UFV Chilliwack campus. They\u2019ll be discussing land use in the Fraser Valley as housing, agriculture industry, commercial, and other uses place increasing pressure on dwindling resources.<\/p>\n
Lum, who is also one of UFV\u2019s 50 Remarkable Alumni<\/a>, brings his perspective on balancing policy pressures with competing land use demands.<\/p>\n \u201cFrom sustainability to development, I will explore strategies and trade-offs in managing land amid growing environmental and economic challenges,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Newman is director of UFV\u2019s Food and Agriculture Institute and a prominent voice in the national conversation about food and agriculture innovation<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cConflicting land uses create a lot of challenge in our region as we have a growing population and very little land,\u201d she says. \u201cIn this talk, I discuss UFV\u2019s emerging One Health hub and look at how it provides a new tool for examining the consequences of land use conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n Science Caf\u00e9s are casual, dynamic interactions between audiences and speakers.
