Can Ghana\u2019s affirmative action bill improve women\u2019s representation in politics?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The event takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in room A225 at UFV Abbotsford.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana has often been portrayed as a role model for democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa, thanks to the relatively peaceful transition of power since the country\u2019s first democratic elections in 1992. However, Ghana is behind other African countries in terms of the gendered aspects of political governance. This lecture will explore whether the affirmative action bill that was passed by Ghana\u2019s Parliament on July 30, 2024, can achieve its aims of promoting gender equality and women empowerment by addressing the systemic barriers that have hindered womens&#8217; political participation in the Ghanaian society.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Profile:<br \/>\nDr Lawrencia Agyepong<br \/>\nDirector &#8211; Centre for International Relations &#8211; University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Ghana.<br \/>\nSenior Lecturer of the Faculty of Integrated Communication Sciences<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lawrencia Agyepong\u2019s background is in political communication and cultural studies. Most of his work centers around celebrity studies, gossip, and politics. His track record is enhancing course quality and revitalizing instruction through innovative educational methods. He has extensive expertise in research methods, political communication, celebrity studies, political marketing, media and communication, gender studies, and cultural studies research.<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to UFV students, staff, and faculty as well as the public.
