In 2019 in Canadian politics, academia, media, sport and culture there were significant examples of how this is hardly the case. The Canadian media hold a critically important position in reporting/presenting this news and in some cases the media (members and organizations) is itself the perpetrator of racism and race based ideologies in their reporting or in their management practices. From the 2019 campaign trail of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, to Don Cherry and the National Hockey League and the Trudeau ‘blackface’ scandal, we seek to explore the deep-seeded histories of racism in this country and seek to understand the role and responses of Canadian media (organizations and persons). Join panelists Anupreet Sandhu Bhamra, (journalist), Mo Dhaliwal (digital strategist) and Jagdeesh Mann (media professional) as they discuss these issues.

From Hollywood, to Hockey, to Universities: Moving Beyond Patterns of Racism
12:00 to 1:30 pm | B132

Closing Plenary: Anti-racism, Action, and Commitment to Change
Fri, March20
1:30 to 3:30 pm | B132

For more information, contact Ruoyu Xiao at RuoYu.Xiao@ufv.ca

03/20/2020

In celebration of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, come join us for this free week-long series of events.
