The SASI is pleased to invite you to a forum on ‘Hockey, Racism and Memory-Making’ on Tuesday, May 28 from 10-12pm at the Sikh Heritage Museum, a National Historic Site and Gur Sikh Temple, followed with langar (vegetarian communal meal) at the Khalsa Diwan Society gurdwara at 12pm.<\/p>\n
Dr. Courtney Szto (Queens University) will discuss the right to public memory as an important marker of citizenship that speaks to human dignity and identity as part of a functioning democratic society. Modern sports halls of fame and museums have carried on this tradition by immortalizing specific (and exclusive) past accomplishments, while concurrently, relegating others to oblivion. Through a more inclusive re-telling of Canada\u2019s hockey history she argues for a form of intersectional justice.<\/p>\n
Dr. Szto’s research is the inspiration behind the SASI curated exhibit, ‘We Are Hockey.’ Bhupinder Singh Hundal (Producer, CBC) will also be speaking about the role of media and diversifying.<\/p>\n
