The KAIROS Blanket Exercise was designed as a participatory, experiential learning activity to illustrate the changing and damaging relationship between Indigenous nations and the government of Canada. KAIROS then partnered with the BC Teachers Federation (BCTF) to adapt the national version of the Blanket exercise for BC and the Nlaka\u2019pamux territory. This version became a part of \u201cThe Gladys We Never Knew\u201d where it is identified that: \u201cThe exercise is designed to deepen understanding of the denial of Indigenous peoples\u2019 nationhood throughout Canadian history. It explores the major themes and recommendations of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, examines how federal policies and programs impact the lives of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and identifies what Indigenous peoples and their allies are doing to bring about positive change\u201d (p.53). This highly effective experiential learning opportunity can be used in the classroom to educate students about the history of colonization and Indigenous-Settler relations in Canada.<\/p>\n
This event has two-parts: experiencing the Blanket exercise and training to run the exercise. The goal is to build capacity at UFV so that individuals can provide this opportunity for their own faculties, schools, and\/or departments. This event will be held from 9 am\u20131 pm, including a provided lunch, on Fri, Jan 11. You will be provided with all materials to run the exercise on your own.<\/p>\n
