VA 421 Directed Study: Painting and Drawing

Being a UFV international student from the beautiful continent of Africa has been such a wonderful blessing because of the opportunities to create unique art. Focusing on the women of Africa, this series of paintings involves women from East, West, South, and North Africa.<\/p>\n
While growing up in Tanzania, I remember being fascinated by the amount of jewelry my great grandmothers wore. Until this day, the beautiful image of my great grandmothers\u2019 traditional wear dominates my memory, especially because of the brightly coloured beads. I draw major inspiration from this and decided to create a series of portraits highlighting various African women\u2019s traditional jewelry.<\/p>\n
While researching, I found out that most of the countries in Africa incorporate beadwork into their jewelry. This made me very excited because I\u2019ve always wanted to play around with the idea of adding beadwork into my paintings. I am very pleased with the ending result; I feel like these works of art speak to my culture, my memory of my great grandmothers, and the whole of Africa.<\/p>\n
