A group of business students had a chance to visit\u00a0 Abbotsford City Hall recently, to learn how our local government works, and to see what opportunities are available for UFV business students.<\/p>\nA group of business students had a chance to visit\u00a0 Abbotsford City Hall recently, to learn how our local government works, and to see what opportunities are available for UFV business students.<\/p>\n
The visit was part of\u00a0 the School of Business Employer Engagement program.<\/p>\n
The morning began in a conference room, where UFV alumna Emily Taylor revealed how a part-time position as an administrative assistant led her current role as economic development coordinator.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I could give you any piece of advice, it would be to do your absolute best at everything you do,\u201d\u00a0 she said. In her experience, having worked part time at The Gap clothing store while attending UFV allowed her to create connections with patrons of the store, who later interviewed her for her first position at the City of Abbotsford.<\/p>\n
After Taylor\u2019s introduction, the students addressed by George Murray, City Manager for the City of Abbotsford. With the focus being on job opportunities, Murray was very knowledgeable and supportive, encouraging students in all of the BBA options to get involved with local government in any way possible, including volunteering at the B.C. Summer Games, and pursuing co-op opportunities or part time employment. Having an open discussion revealed the myriad of opportunities available to students nearing graduation, or who may want to start their job hunt early.<\/p>\n
Following the presentation was a Q & A session, where students could ask questions to Murray, who used his knowledge from working over 30 years in the public sector was able to address all things concerning the city\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n
A special thank you to the city of Abbotsford on behalf of the Employer Engagement program for hosting the group of students, and providing an overview of what it is like to work in local government.<\/p>\n
