The UFV Cascades defeated Evergreen State College Mariners, 2-1, in the first game of the three game pre-season road trip to Washington and Oregon.  James Najman, Coquitlam, BC opened the scoring in the 30th minute from a cross by Connor O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC with a perfect header beating the outstretched arms of the Mariner goalkeeper.  Dalibor Plasvic, Coquitlam, BC, scored UFV’s second goal in the 55th minute after receiving a pass from Daniel Davidson, Abbotsford, BC.  The tally by Dali turned out to be the winning goal as UFV’s defense made the score stand up.

Arturo Ortiz, Veracruz, Mexico,  was denied the shutout with only 5 minutes as the Mariners scored off a throw-in. “A very workmanlike performance from a young UFV team today. We rested some of our senior players to have a look at the rookies and they came thru with flying colors,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.   “Great performances from Sahib Phagura, a second year defender from Abbotsford, BC and Connor MacMillan, a second year midfielder from Chilliwack, BC.”

Sunday, August 25th

The Cascades continued their winning ways with a convincing 1-0 over Willamette University Bearcats today in Salem Oregon.  MacMillan scored with a volley into the top corner from 18 yards after a corner from Connor O’Neill.  Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC, recorded several saves to secure the shutout victory over the Bearcats.

“A convincing win with a professional performance. I think the score flattered the opposition with all due respect. Solid performances from all players, but the back four have to be singled out for their flawless performance,” said Errington.
