Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team tied the 2013 Alberta Games team, 0-0, at Exhibition Park, in Abbotsford, BC.  While this was UFV’s final match together for the 2012-13 season, this is the first week together for the Alberta Games team as they prepare for the long road to Sherbrooke, Quebec, hosts of the 2013 Canada Summer Games, August 2 to 17.  www.sherbrooke2013.ca

The game was evenly played in the middle of the park as the young U-18 Canada Games team kept up with the more experienced UFV varsity program.  Both teams had several good scoring chances but goalkeepers Sarah Dubois, Edmonton, Alberta and Rebecca Reif, Edmonton, Alberta held UFV’s high powered offense in check.  Veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC playing in her final Cascade match was up to the task shutting out the Alberta games team.

The Cascades player of the match was Danika Snook, a fourth year midfielder from Chilliwack, BC who played an extremely great defensive game shutting down the Alberta games team midfielders.  Alberta’s player of the match was Jessica French, a center back (defender) from Edmonton, Alberta.  French marked the Cascade forwards well and kept them from any point blank shots on her keepers.

“It was a good game, we started poorly but for good portions of the game we did well.  The Alberta Canada Summer Games team is a talented group and we had to be organized and cohesive defensively to limit their time and space. We were able to get all available team members some quality playing time so all in all it was a good spring game,” commented UFV head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.

Men’s Soccer

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team defeated the Alberta Summer games team, 2-0, at Exhibition Park, in Abbotsford, BC.  The Cascades have one more friendly before they break for summer, taking on the NASL Edmonton team with the return of former Cascade coach Colin Miller.  This is the first week together for the Alberta Games team as they prepare for the trip to Sherbrooke, Quebec, hosts of the 2013 Canada Summer Games, August 2 to 17.  www.sherbrooke2013.ca

The Cascades were strong this afternoon playing and very tough defensive brand of soccer to open the match.  “We wanted to close them down early and see what their forwards were like,” said UFV head coach Alan Errington.  The Cascades put pressure on the Alberta games team goalkeeper Vu Ndhlovh, Edmonton, Alberta but he made several great saves off shots by Colton O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC and Daniel Molendjk, Langley, BC, to keep the match scoreless.  The Cascades broke the tie in the 40th minute as Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC placed a perfect corner kick on the foot of Molendjk and the second year midfielder had no trouble beating Ndhlovh for the one goal lead at the break.

The second half was a bit “chippy” as both teams were trying to take advantage of a more wide open style of play.  The Cascades were able to score a second goal midway through the half as Liddiard again set up Molendjk for his second tally of the match.  Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC settle down the Cascade defense as he earned the exhibition match shutout making four “official” saves on shots by the Alberta games team.

“A good effort by our guys today, considering this is their fourth match in six days,” said Errington.  “We will try to field a competitive team tomorrow against the Edmonton FC, but our lads are exhausted and have classes in the morning.”

Enclosed is a composite schedule for the week’s soccer matches, all home matches will be played at Exhibition Park in Abbotsford.
