Friday brought two wins and a loss to UFV Cascade athletic teams engaged in playoff action. The women’s volleyball team won the first game of the PACWEST championship tournament, earning a berth in Saturday’s final and a trip to the nationals March 7-9. The men’s basketball team won the first of their three game Canada West quarterfinal series against Saskatchewan, and the women’s basketball team lost the second of their three game series against Saskatchewan, setting them up for a do-or-die contest at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford Saturday night at 7 pm.

UFV Cascades Women’s Volleyball team defeat Capilano U Blues, 3-1, earn berth in CCAA national championship tournament

women's volleyballThe University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team defeated the Capilano University Blues, 3-1, to earn a berth in the 2013 CCAA national championship tournament, in Lloydminster, Alberta the weekend of March 7-9. The Cascades, ranked number one in the CCAA top ten poll, will face the CBC Bearcats, who defeated the VIU Mariners, 3-2 today, in the 2013 PACWEST Championship game Saturday at 4:30pm PST.  The Cascades are the defending PACWEST silver medalist. this will be their second straight appearance in the PACWEST Gold Medal match.  The set scores Friday were 25-16, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-15.

The Cascades defeated CBC all four times they played this regular season by a set scores of 12-3.  This will be the first time the two Abbotsford rivals will play each other on a neutral site for the conference championship.  UFV seniors Brittany Stewart, Kayla Bruce, and Kate Bilodeau, know this is their last opportunity to win a PACWEST conference title before they graduate. Both teams are guaranteed trips to the CCAA national championship tournament as two PACWEST teams receive invitations. UFV goes into the championship game sporting a 23-2 overall record (22-2 regular season and 1-0 playoffs).

UFV Cascades men’s basketball team defeat Saskatchewan Huskies, 83-64, in game one of Canada West quarterfinals

 

BASKETBALLLLThe University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (Prairie Division regular season champions) by a score of 83-64 Friday in Saskatoon, in game one of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal.

The Cascades came out shooting tonight and quickly jumped out to a nine point lead in the first quarter before the hometown Huskies roared back to tie the game midway through the first quarter, at 18 each.  UFV continued to keep pace with the high powered Huskie offense as they shot an impressive  45 percent from the floor led by  fifth-year veteran Sam Freeman with 15 points, including three long range bombs. Kyle Grewal had his playoff face on tonight as he added 12 halftime points and 4 rebounds. Kevon Parchment, playing in his first ever Canada West post season game, scored 7 points and pulled down 4 boards, while playing the entire half.  Six different Cascades scored at least two points in the half.  UFV pulled down 19 rebounds and forced 8 Saskatchewan turnovers as they led by three at the break.

 

 

Freeman led all scorers with a 26-point performance. He recorded 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals as he played a tremendous role in the victory. Grewal added 20 points, 7 boards and blocked two shots, while Parchment was one of three players to play 38 minutes, he finished with 15 points, and a team high 9 rebounds.

“Our seniors played a very determined game tonight, they know this is their last playoff run at the CIS level.  They proved tonight they will play hard and give 110 percent down the stretch,” commented coach Adam Friesen..

UFV Cascades women’s basketball team drop game two of Canada West quarterfinals to  Saskatchewan Huskies, 67-56, tonight at the EAC

Women's bball Wierks.The UFV Cascades fall 67-56 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the Envision Athletic Centre, in game two of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal series. Fresh off their win last night, the Cascades looked to sweep the playoff series but a tough Huskie team forced game three in Abbotsford Saturday night.

Nicole Wierks led all Cascades with 17 points. Aieisha Luyken added 12 as they were the only two Cascades in double figures. Kayli Sartori hit for 9 points and led UFV with 9 boards.

Saturday night’s contest starts at 7pm, the winner goes onto the Canada West “Final Four”, the loser is eliminated from the Canada West tournament.
