China study tour running for a third time in summer 2015

Great-Wall-of-China-2By popular demand, the summer study tour to Wuhan University will run again in 2015.
Once again, UFV’s partner university, Wuhan University in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province in China, is offering UFV students the opportunity to participate in a full-fledged cultural and language immersion experience from May 8 to 29, 2015.

Local families will provide participants with free homestay placements. Students who apply before February 28, 2015, can take advantage of a 50% discount on the $350 tuition fee. A $100 deposit is required to save your spot when you hand in your application form.

The short-term study program includes three hours in class learning Mandarin and culture in the mornings and interactive activities with local students in the afternoons. Calligraphy, Tai Chi and Chinese paper cutting will be on the agenda, as well as cultural events and visits to local scenic spots and historical sites.

In addition to cultural and language studies, students can also participate in an optional one-week sightseeing tour of Beijing and Shanghai, at an additional estimated cost of $350 CAD which includes, hotel accommodations, entrance into tourist attractions and meals. (based on 2014 prices).

“Rather than learning by hearing or writing, we were learning by doing, seeing, and experiencing,” says Jag Deol, who led the group of UFV students on the trip in 2013 and 2014. “There is no better way to learn about a culture than to live among its people. This was the most amazing experience of my life.”

Canadian students who wish to get work experience can apply for the paid co-op option, which provides them with the opportunity to teach English at Wuhan University. Students choosing the co-op option may receive up to 3000 RMB (around $490 CAD) to subsidize their travel costs.

UFV students who take part in this short-term study tour can earn 3 UFV credits, equivalent to Mandarin 210 (Chinese Culture and Civilization).

Those who are interested in the study tour should apply early: there are only 25 spots available, open to students from all the schools that partner with Wuhan University. Contact StudyAbroad@ufv.ca to reserve your spot.
