PD event: Culture in the classroom — May 12

Internationalization and shifting domestic demographics have contributed to increasing cultural diversity on Canadian campuses. This diversity brings both challenges and opportunities. This workshop will provide you with a better understanding of internationalization trends in higher education and how intercultural frameworks and tools can help us become more effective educators in this 21st century environment.

Learning Outcomes
– Review current trends and thinking around internationalization

– Consider how cultural values and preferences influence expectations and behaviours in academic settings

– Be introduced to intercultural frameworks and tools

– Discuss pedagogical strategies for culturally diverse learning environments

Who should attend:
This workshop is designed for faculty; however, we encourage non-teaching faculty, staff, and management who are interested to attend this informative event.

About the Facilitator:
Dr. Kyra Garson is a faculty member in the Centre for Student Engagement and Learning Innovation at Thompson Rivers University. Kyra works with faculty, staff, and students at TRU and across the country to establish global and intercultural competencies as a necessary and relevant skill set across the campus. Among other achievements, she was the primary researcher and writer for TRU: A Globally Minded Campus—A Resource for Academic Units as well as the professional development videos Culturally Diverse Learners. She is a curriculum developer and instructor for Queen’s University’s International Educators Training Program.
