Do you want to learn more about biology, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry or perhaps agriculture and computer information systems? These are just a few of the UFV’s science-related activities and displays featured at the upcoming 2012 Community Science Celebration and Careers in Science events.

UFV’s Faculty of Science and the UFV Alumni Association are once again partnering with Science World and the Chilliwack and Abbotsford School Districts to host these annual community science events.

This year a week of science activities at Fraser Valley schools culminates in a community science celebration at the Evergreen Hall, 9291 Corbould Street in Chilliwack. The free family event runs from 10:30 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Jan. 28.

In addition to UFV and Science World, over 20 community exhibitors will provide displays, demonstrations and cool hands-on science activities for all ages. Exhibitors at the science celebration include:

On Wednesday, Feb 22 UFV will be hosting a Careers in Science event at the Abbotsford campus. Students interested in discovering future careers in science are invited to an evening in room B101 (B building, lecture theatre) to hear from science and technology career professionals including UFV science alumni. There will be an inter-active panel discussion and time to network and explore career options on a one-to-one basis. Refreshments will be provided.

“Participating in the Community Science Celebration and the Careers in Science event is just part of what UFV is doing to make sure that students in the Fraser Valley are excited by science opportunities,” said UFV Dean of Science Ora Steyn. “We encourage scientists of all ages to come out and see us.”

The Careers in Science event at UFV is free of charge to Fraser Valley students but you must register in advance by contacting UFV’s science advisor Karen Cooper at science.advice@ufv.ca.

The UFV Faculty of Science is organized into five academic departments (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics) and offers a wide range of innovative programs that allow students to choose diverse and exciting academic and professional careers.
