Visit Tanzania to help develop a community, and yourself

UFV students on their internship in Tanzania.

Strengthen your resume and gain international experience while positively impacting a community across the world.

That’s the opportunity being offered to UFV students through six funded summer internships to Tanzania, Africa with the Global Development Institute (GDI).

The project is made possible by funding received from the Canadian International Development Agency and the Students for Development Program managed by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

Come to information sessions about opportunities to be part of this project: Mon, Nov 14, Noon Geography Lab
Thurs, Nov 17 5 pm A416.

“The goal and focus of the event is to promote the partnership with AUCC, but also to showcase what UFV is doing in Africa with students, and the further opportunity for students there,” said UFV Georgraphy instructor Cherie Enns.

“It certainly strengthens a student’s resume in an increasingly competitive market. Whether they want to be a teacher, urban planner or pursue business… it gives them a competitive edge.”

While in Tanzania, students who receive the funded internship conduct research related to informal settlement at Ardhi University located in Dar es Salaam.

There is also room for students to apply for un-funded positions, in which they would be working in different capacities but with an array of similar skills.

Both internships provide opportunities to apply skills and techniques learned in the classroom, said Enns.

“You are value adding while you’re gaining your own experience,” said Enns.

She added that many who return from the trip agree that it’s a good opportunity to step out of the day-to-day living and rethink the direction they’re going.

Two funded interns are being sent to Tanzania in January. Four more are going in May.

Anyone can apply for the grant by sending a cover letter and resume to Garry Fehr or Cherie Enns.

While applications for the January internship have now closed, applications will be accepted until the end of November for the May departure.

Both funded and unfunded internships receive course credit.
